Islington Gates Balcony Refurbishment

Islington Gates Balcony Refurbishment

Islington Gates, a £25 million mixed-use development in Birmingham, was among the first in the UK to undergo critical remediation following the Grenfell fire. Built in 2004/05, the project comprises 141 apartments and commercial units, located at Farmers Lock along the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal. As part of the fire safety upgrades, the original wooden decking was replaced to meet stringent new regulations, ensuring enhanced safety for residents. The remediation works not only improved fire resistance but also revitalized the external spaces, providing a secure and updated environment for the building’s occupants.

Project Breakdown

The Islington Gates development, comprising 141 apartments and commercial units, required extensive upgrades to comply with new fire safety standards. Located in Birmingham’s central Jewellery Quarter, the project spanned 455sqm of balcony space, replacing the original wooden decking with a safer alternative. The scheme qualified for a multi-million-pound grant from the Building Safety Fund, addressing the need to replace both cladding and balcony flooring. With tenants remaining on-site during the works, ensuring minimal disruption was key, making coordination between the Birmingham County Council, Woodman Brothers, and EnviroBuild essential.

The Solution

EnviroBuild provided Sepia Brown Pro-Grip Aluminium Decking, chosen for its fire resistance and durability, ensuring the development met updated safety standards. The aluminium decking was supported by MESA Aluminium Joists and Steel Pedestals, offering structural integrity and longevity. Throughout the project, EnviroBuild collaborated with contractor Woodman Brothers to ensure timely delivery, and worked closely with architect Easton Bevins to provide comprehensive technical data and test reports. This proactive approach guaranteed compliance with fire regulations, enhancing safety for residents while keeping the project on schedule and within scope.
